Known as the Tree of Hope, this giant bamboo-weaved banyan tree was displayed inside the Taiwan Pavilion at World Expo 2010 Shanghai. Designed by Taiwanese designer Yao Zhengzhong, it was handcrafted by bamboo artisans using traditional random weaving techniques. The whole installation forms a cave-like interior space, with woven bamboo branches and canopy stretching overhead. Dynamic lighting simulates sunrise, sunset and night sky, creating immersive atmosphere. Beneath the tree, visitors could rest, enjoy tea performances and folk music. This landmark bamboo artwork interpreted the theme “Nature, Mind and City”. It perfectly shows how hand-woven bamboo can build large-scale, artistic indoor landscapes for world-class exhibitions.
